ENTRY #1

Long, long ago on a Brazilian island there lived a young girl. She had long, curly, blonde hair and blue eyes. Her name was Sunshine. Sunshine was the Goddess of the Sun. She was very lonely on the island.
One day there came along another young girl. She had shorter, brown hair and green eyes. Her name was Rainbow. She was the Goddess of Color.
The two goddesses bumped into each other and realized they hadn’t yet met. They shook hands and Sunshine introduced herself.
“Hello. My name is Sunshine. I am the goddess of the sun.”
“Hi. My name is rainbow. I am the goddess of color.”
Soon the two goddesses started hanging out together. They became good friends. They enjoyed playing in the green grass and in the beach sand. The girls began to wander the island and see what they could find. The girls got to the end of the beach and laid down in the sand.
“Rainbow look the sun has no color!”
“Oh yeah you're right”
The girls tried to fly up and color it, but then they realized they had a problem. They couldn’t fly! Their wings didn’t work!
“Sunshine I can’t fly!”
“Me neither!”
“What should we do?”
“Well, I heard that the sand on the way further side of the beach has magical sand that helps goddesses and fairies fly.”
“Really!? Let’s go and get some”
After a day and night of walking and swimming they finally reached the area. They saw that the sand was all sparkly.
“Okay Rainbow. I’ll put some on your wings and you put some on mine.”
“Okay, then we will take out our sacks and put some extra in them.”
Sunshine and rainbow thought of a color they both liked and that would be a nice color for the sun.
“How about yellow?”
“Yeah! Great idea Rainbow!”
Then the girls flew up and counted down.
“1…2…3!”
“Pooooof!”
Then the sun was bright yellow and looked amazing. The girls decided they did a good job choosing a color. They were very satisfied. That is how the sun got its color.

 The end

Why Water Freezes in the Winter

Once, a long time ago, there was a Native American chief named Scipio.

Scipio was tall and strong and wore a headdress of feathers he had earned

doing brave deeds when he was young.  But now he was also old and so he had much

experience leading his tribal people. He knew very much. Since he was elderly, he liked

to be warm and not cold, so when it was cold, he would he would stay inside his tee pee

and sit by the fire, wrapped in a blanket and drink hot herb tea.

There was a god named Temperate. He was god of the cold and he loved to be

cool, even freezing. He never liked being warm because he was made of ice and would

melt.  His favorite place to visit on earth were areas where barren areas that he could turn

into a cold, harsh environment. Even in this freezing cold place, the people still had to

depend on the environment for most of their resources.

Chief Scipio’s people always wondered why water had to turn hard when it was

cold. This made things more difficult for them. They had to make big holes through thick

ice to catch fish or get good water for their tea.  One day the people asked him why the

water turned into ice.  Scipio was proud and he did not want the people to know that he

did not know either.  So he went on a long walk to Temperate’s temple and said,

“Temperate, please help me. The people want to know why the water turns hard when

it gets cold.”

“Tell them you do not know, “ answered  Temperate in a not nice way.

“ I cannot tell them that. They will be mad at me and make fun of me,” whined

        Scipio.
Temperate felt sorry for Scipio and said, “Then I will tell you.”

So Temperate  related a long story to Scipio.” At the end, he was tired. “Now be gone with

you!” yelled  Temperate.

Scipio did not go but said, “They will think that I made up this story!”

          “Be gone!” thundered Temperate.

“Be gone,” Scipio said mockingly and left.

As Scipio walked back to the meeting house where everyone was waiting to hear

his explanation, he practiced telling the story. One he got to the meeting house, he told

it. “A long time ago, the humans did not like Temperate because he made it so cold.

They revolted against Temperate and shot flaming arrows at him. Temperate used his

ice power to freeze their arrows. After a long time of fighting, the humans ran out of

arrows. Then Temperate told the humans as a punishment that every year when it got

cold, their water would turn hard.”  After the chief finished his story, a few minutes of

silence followed. Then everyone got up and left.   As they walked away, Scipio heard

them talking to each other. They were all pleased with the answer. No one was mad

at him. Scipio was relieved he visited Temperate to help his people with their question.
